Recently Google added
cohort analysis tab to Analytics. Cohort Analysis is a way to analyze behavior
by segmenting users into groups that have had similar experiences within a
given timespan. If you’re looking to do
a cohort analysis earlier you should probably have to purchase one of paid
services like Mixpanel and Kissmetrics. Cohort tracking is a standard feature
of Google Analytics so you’ll need to set it up like other tracking options
such as custom variables or events and you can add new segments (like Search
Traffic, Paid Traffic, Desktop Traffic, Tablet Traffic, Visitors Age and Gender
etc.).
Cohort analysis feature
introduced as a powerful way to understand patterns and derive the truly useful,
subset of behavioral analytics that takes the data from a given ecommerce
platform, actionable insights into user behavior. It’s also pretty easy to get
a simple implementation and analysis running faster, especially if you’re only
interested in tracking user retention for your website in single click, it
breaks them into related groups (Cohort Type, Cohort Size, Metrics and Date
Range etc. ) for efficient analysis.
Cohort Analysis reports
allows us to select:
Cohort
type: The dimension that characterizes the cohorts (limited,
only acquisition date cohorts)
Cohort
Size: Determine the size of the cohort by selecting the
value type (by day, by week, by month) for the Cohort type
Metrics:
Metric you want to evaluate (Per User, Retention, and Total)
Date
Range: Relative date range of the data, and the number of
cohorts
Understand the data:
Chart: The
chart shows the cumulative metric values for all cohorts.
Columns: The
first column identifies the cohorts and the number of users in each cohort during
that time frame (day, week, and month). The rest of the columns reflect the
time increments you choose for Cohort Size.
Rows: The
first row shows the total metric value for all cohorts for each column. The
other rows show the values for the individual cohorts.
Cells: The
cells for time increments 0-12 hold the relevant metric values
Segments: When
you apply Segments to this report, the data for each Segment is displayed in a
separate table.
Cohort Analysis Beta version
have limited features, but these new features are the latest examples of a shift
in Google Analytics towards providing more user-centric analysis.
